JIM CORBETT NATIONAL PARK
ABOUT –
Jim Corbett National Park is a national park in India, located in the Nainital district of the Uttarakhand state. The first national park in India, it was established in 1936 during the British Raj and named Hailey national park, a governor of the United Provinces in which it was then located. In 1956, nearly a decade after India’s independence, it was renamed Corbett National Park after the hunter and naturalist Jim Corbett, who had played a leading role in its establishment and had died the year before. The park was the first to come under the Project Tiger initiative.
Jim Corbett National Park Forest mainly consists of Sal, Haldu, Peepal, Rohini, and Mango trees. Forest covers almost 73% of the park, while 10% of the area consists of grassland. It has around 110 tree species, 50 species of mammals, 580 bird species, and 25 reptile species. Rich in floral and fauna, it’s known for its Bengal Tigers. The total area of the park is around 1318 km.
HOW TO REACH JIM CORBETT NATIONAL PARK –
In this blog, I will assume that you are staying in New Delhi and I will tell you how to reach Jim Corbett National Park. There are busses available from Delhi Kashmiri gate to Ramnagar on daily basis, which takes around 6 to 7 hours to reach Ramnagar, Jim Corbett Park is around 10 km away from Ramnagar. If you want to go via train, you can go as daily trains to Ramnagar are available during the day as well as at night also, it takes around 5 hours to reach Ramnagar. Ranikhet express leaves from old Delhi railway station to Ramnagar on daily basis. One can go by car as well, the roads are very good and it takes around 5 to 6 hours to reach Ramnagar. The route to reach Ramnagar from Delhi is via Muradabad and Kapur. Jim Corbett National Park is around 270 km far from Delhi.
If you are traveling in your car, it is advisable to leave early in the morning around 5 am from Delhi, to avoid the heavy traffic of the city and you can reach Jim Corbett in 5 and half hours taking one stop in between, where you can take your breakfast and a break for 30 minutes.
BEST TIME TO VISIT JIM CORBETT NATIONAL PARK –
Well, one can visit Jim Corbett around the whole year, but it depends from person to person. If a person is a nature lover, he must visit Jim Corbett from July to September, as it is monsoon season here and one can enjoy green lush grasslands everywhere, but some parts of the park remain closed from 1st July till 14th November. If you are a wildlife lover, then you must visit Jim Corbett from November to June as all the zones of the parks are open in these months. The best time to sight the Bengal Tiger is in April to June as it is summer here and all the trees get dried and one can see till far in the forest moreover water also gets dried in the forest and wild animals turn to the riverside to drink water and chances of sighting increases. In winter the nights are cold but the days are pleasant and sunny here.
DIFFERENT ZONES OF JIM CORBETT –
There are majorly 8 zones the park is divided into, namely Bijrani, Dhikala, Jhirna, Dhela, Durga Devi, Garjiya, Sitabani and phato.
Following are the details of all the gates when they open and close.
- Dhikala – Dhangari gate of the Dhikala zone remains open from 15th November to 30th June.
- Jhirna Gate – This gate is open around the whole year.
- Durga Devi Gate – This gate is open from 15th October to 30th June.
- Sitabani Gate – This gate is open around the year.
- Bijrani Gate – This gate is open from the 15th of October to the 30th of June.
Whangarei gate of Dhikala zone is the best and biggest zone of the Jim Corbett National Park.
Jhirna and Dhela gates are also considered to be among the very good gates where one can sight the Bengal tiger.
WHERE TO STAY –
There are about 200 good properties in Jim Corbett National Park where a person can stay. If you need a budget hotel, then you can stay in Ramnagar city near the bus stand, there are quite a few hotels in the range of Rs 1000 to 1200 for a twin-sharing basis. One of them which comes to my mind is Hotel Himalaya which is near the bus stand.
Well, if you are looking for a luxury stay in Jim Corbett many resorts fall in the 4-star category and even the 5-star category. Near Ramnagar city there is a village named Teda, which comes in the Tiger reserve area, there is a very good property here by the name Panorama resort, it is a 4-star property with luxury accommodations and excellent food quality and many more facilities like a bonfire, indoor games, Swimming Pool, etc…
One can find many excellent properties on Dhikuli road as well like, Namaha, Taj Corbett Resort and Spa, Club Mahindra, Tiger Kingdom, The River View Retreat, Lemon Tree, Corbett Symphony, Wood Castle Spa and Resort, etc …. If you want to stay in these star properties, you will have to pay around Rs 7000 to Rs 15000.00 for a night, depending upon the season.
WHERE TO EAT –
The best two restaurants which come to my mind in Jim Corbett are Village Vatika and Diner’s Villa which are located on Dhikuli road in Jim Corbett. You can get almost everything in these restaurants to eat, and the taste and quality of the food are the best, I have eaten here more than 15 times. Whenever I go to Jim Corbett, I take my lunch or sometimes my dinner here only. If you don’t want to spend more than one choice is Share-e-Punjab in Ramnagar, which offers very good fugally food and is cost effective also. One can enjoy street food also in Ramnagar, near the bus stand, you can get a variety of foods here like Chinese, Pizza, Omelette, Sandwiches, Tea, Cold coffee and much more… in the evening time and is open till late in the night.
If you are a south Indian food lover, then you can go to Hanuman Dham,( temple dedicated to Hanuman Ji) just 5 to 6 km away from Ramnagar city, Dosa Factory restaurant is there, which offers you excellent quality of all south Indian food.
Tea served in Kuhlad named Kulhad Chai or tandoori Chai is very famous in Jim Corbett, one can enjoy special tea made in tandoor and severed in had at The Kumouni Roots which is located near Garjiya zone gate when a person goes to Dhikuli road from Ramnagar. One can also enjoy Kumauni food at this restaurant, they serve Kumauni thali at Rs 600.00 which is worth eating and is freshly made, and is very tasty. There are these two girls named Hema and Deepika who look after the restaurant and they make excellent food, must try once, when in Jim Corbett.
THINGS TO CARRY WHILE GOING TO JIM CORBETT –
If you are going to Jim Corbett in the months of summer from March to July, the following are some important things you must carry with you.
Hat, Sunglasses, Sunscreen lotion, carry light cotton clothes, wet wipes and if you are a person who loves to go on a walk, then an umbrella also, to protect yourself from sunlight, good pair of shoes for walking and trekking.
If you are going in the Monsoon season you must carry an umbrella, raincoat, wet wipes, hat, cotton clothes, good pair of shoes.
If you are visiting Jim Corbett in winter then you must carry light woolen clothes, a half sleeve jacket, a sweater as the nights here gets cold, sunglasses for the day, a hat, wet wives, good pair of shoes.
THINGS TO DO IN JIM CORBETT –
There are many lots of things to do in Jim Corbett apart from enjoying your luxury resort. Mainly tourist comes here to see the Bengal tiger, which can be seen only in the core jungle, so in advance, you need to book your jungle safari, which you can book online 90 days before your visiting dates in Jim Corbett. The cost of this jungle safari is Rs 5000.00 for Indians for which 6 adults and 2 children below the age of 5 are allowed, whereas for foreigners the cost of the jungle safari is Rs 12000.00. There are restrictions on the number of jeeps which is allowed to enter each zone and are strictly followed. The jungle safari is around 3 and a half hours duration.
Apart from enjoying the jungle safari one can go on a nature walk with a proper guide, which is provided by many resorts in Jim Corbett. One can also enjoy water activities like river crossing, sitting beside the river Kosi and Ramganga, one can do fishing also in the river Ramganga. Enjoy the nature and music of the jungle in the evenings, when it is silent. There are adventure activities also to do in Jim Corbett like Hot Air Ballon, wall climbing, wall rappelling, bull ride, Bungee Trampoline, Net Climbing, Archery, etc… one can enjoy all these activities at Devbhoomi Outdoor Adventure which is located at the Dhikuli road.
One can also enjoy the camel ride and Elephant ride while going to the Adhikari road, camels and elephants are available for a short or long ride as per your demands. One can also take selfies with one if one doesn’t wish to take a ride.
Apart from doing all these activities if you have a proper guide with you, you can go for trekking also in Jim Corbett and a short walk to the river and sit for some time and enjoy the nature and forest of Jim Corbett, but one must not go alone, it is advisable to take a local guide with you.
One can also enjoy bird watching in Jim Corbett National Park.
